@NKUNorseSB wins thriller in Cleveland State split

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Northern Kentucky started Tuesday's Horizon League doubleheader at Cleveland State with a dramatic 4-3, nine-inning comeback victory and then fell to the Vikings 3-1 in the second game at Viking Field.

The Norse (14-19, 4-7 Horizon League) face the Vikings again at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the third game of the series. 
 
GAME ONE: NKU 4, Cleveland State 3 (9 innings)
At the Plate

  • Sophie Margelot singled to left center in the top of the fifth inning and went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Jenna O'Hair scored the Norse's first run via Sophie Margelot's RBI. She went 1-for-2 with the game-winning sac fly RBI, which plated Tatum Biddle in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Tatum Biddle went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs scored. She tripled center field and scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Then, in the top of the ninth, she doubled and later scored on Jenna O'Hair's sac fly RBI.
  • Kendyl McKeough doubled top of the eighth. She scored on Megan Kincer's RBI-single.
  • Jordan Jenkins went 3-for-3 on a day NKU amassed eight hits. 
In the Circle
  • Alicia Flores (3-6) took over in the bottom of the seventh with the game tied. She twice struck out the side, including the bottom of the ninth. In three innings, she allowed one hit and one run. She struck out six and walked none.
  • Sydni Barnes replaced Hicks in the top of the fifth with NKU down 2-0. She gave up three hits and no runs in two innings, striking out one and walking none.
  • Lauryn Hicks pitched four innings and struck out seven of Cleveland State's first 12 batters. She surrendered four hits and two runs, both earned, while striking out seven and walking two.
At a Glance
  • The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after leadoff batter Jenna Deang singled to center field and Becky Hurosky's RBI-double brought in the run.
  • Jordan Jenkins accounted for the Norse's first hit (and the first of her three hits throughout) in the top of the second, but pinch runner Hannah Colbert advanced no further due to three ensuing consecutive outs.
  • Courtney Fernette hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the second to make it 2-0. Hicks struck out the next three batters.
  • Jenna O'Hair scored in the top of the fifth. She walked, stole second and came home on Sophie Margelot's RBI-single.
  • Tatum Biddle tripled to center field and scored the tying run on a wild pitch with no outs in the top of the seventh. It was Biddle's third triple this season.
  • Alicia Flores took over in the circle in the bottom of the seventh and struck out the side, ensuring an extra inning.
  • Kendyl McKeough led off with a double in the top of the eighth (her ninth double of the season). Megan Kincer singled to right field and Keough scored for the 3-2 Norse lead.
  • Courtney Fernette hit her second home run in the bottom of the eighth to knot the score at three.
  • In the top of the ninth, Tatum Biddle doubled to left center and advanced to third on Olivia Pastin's sac bunt. Jenna O'Hair's sac fly RBI plated Biddle for the 4-3 Norse lead.
  • Alicia Flores struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to cement the comeback win.
  • NKU trailed 2-0 and rallied for the 4-3 extra innings triumph.
 
GAME TWO: Cleveland State 3, NKU 1
At the Plate In the Circle
  • Alicia Flores took over in the bottom of the second after the Vikings vaulted ahead 3-1. In 4.2 innings, she allowed no hits, no runs and struck out four with no walks.
  • Madisyn Eads (8-7) started the game and pitched 1.1 innings. She six hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts or walks. 
At a Glance
  • The Vikings amassed three hits and a run in the bottom of the first, but NKU tied the game 1-all in the top of the second.
  • The Norse twice loaded the bases. Trinity Robertson, who'd reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third and later scored an unearned run when Ella LeMonier reached on a fielding error.
  • Cleveland State scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. Alicia Flores replaced Madisyn Eads in the circle and expedited the last two outs.
  • The Norse loaded the bases in the top of the fourth but came up empty and stranded all three runners.
  • The Norse left 13 on base throughout. Cleveland State stranded two.

NKU returns to Viking Field to face Cleveland State at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the final game of the series.
