Softball defeats Michigan State for first Power 5 win in school history

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Northern Kentucky softball program started off the 2023 Texas A&M Invitational with a record-breaking performance and the Norse ended the tournament the same way with a school first as NKU defeated Michigan State, 3-1 on Sunday in College Station, Texas. The victory was the first Power 5 win for the program in school history.

RECORDS: NKU 2-3 (0-0 HL), MSU 3-2 (0-0 Big Ten) 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- Brielle DiMemmo paced the NKU offense with a 2-for-3 day that included two RBI and a run scored.
- Tatum Biddle was also an important part of the attack as she went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
- Trinity Robertson (1-for-2) and Charly Koehler (1-for-2, RBI) also contributed in the win.
- Ella LeMonier added a 2-for-3 day at the dish.
- Alicia Flores picked up the win in the circle after she allowed just one hit and one earned run over five strong innings to go with four punch outs.
- Madisyn Eads picked up her fourth career save with a scoreless top of the seventh that included a two-out strikeout to seal the victory.
- Lauryn Hicks also threw a scoreless inning in relief.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
-  The Norse and Spartans played three scoreless innings before a Michigan State homer in the top of the fourth put MSU ahead 1-0.
- NKU answered right back in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs in the inning, DiMemmo doubled down the left field line to plate Biddle and Koehler followed her up with a RBI double of her own down the left line to put the Norse ahead 2-1.
- Northern Kentucky added another run of insurance in the bottom of the sixth as DiMemmo struck again with a RBI single to left to make it 3-1.
- Eads slammed the door in the top of the seventh to close out the victory.
 
NEXT UP 
The Norse will return to Highland Heights to regroup before taking off for another top-level tournament, this time with Southern Illinois's Coach B Classic that runs Friday, Feb. 24 through Sunday, Feb. 26 at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois. The tournament will feature teams from NKU, Southern Illinois, SIUE and DePaul.
