Softball falls in UNF Spring Break Challenge Opener; nightcap canceled due to rain

JACKSONVILLE – The Northern Kentucky softball program fell in its UNF Spring Break Challenge opener to host North Florida by a 9-5 margin at the UNF Softball Complex on Friday.
 
The Norse's second game of the day against Troy was later canceled due to inclement weather hitting the Jacksonville area. The contest will not be made up.
 
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 5, North Florida – 9 (7 innings)

RECORDS: NKU 4-13 (0-0 HL), UNF 13-6 (0-0 ASUN) 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- Olivia Pastin led the Norse attack with a 2-for-3 day at the plate that included two RBI and two runs scored.
- Maddie Lacer (1-for-2) and Jena Rhoads (1-for-3) also added a RBI apiece for NKU.
- Ella LeMonier and Pastin led NKU with two runs scored.
- Pastin (two), Lacer (one), Rhoads (one), Sydni Barnes (one), Trinity Robertson (one) and LeMonier (one) all collected hits for the Norse in the contest.
- LeMonier and Lacer both picked up a stolen base.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
- NKU got on the board first in the top of the second as Rhoads blasted a RBI single through the right side to make it 1-0 Norse.
- UNF answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a run of its own to tie the game at 1-1.
- Northern Kentucky jumped back ahead in the top of the third as both Pastin and Lacer laced RBI singles to give NKU the edge at 3-1.
- North Florida responded with a run in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth to go back ahead at 5-3.
- The Norse weren't done yet as they fought right back with two runs in the fifth to tie the contest again at 5-5.
- North Florida pulled away with a run in the bottom half of the inning and three more in the bottom of the sixth as the Ospreys escaped with the 9-5 win.
 
NEXT UP 
The Norse return for the second day of the UNF Spring Break Challenge on Saturday, March 11. NKU is set to take on Troy at 3 PM ET, followed by a rematch against North Florida at 5 PM.
