Softball plays tough; drops doubleheader to Dayton

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky softball program played back-to-back tough games, but in the end the Norse found themselves on the wrong side of a doubleheader sweep by visiting Dayton at the Frank Ignatius Grein Field on Tuesday afternoon.


THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 0, Dayton – 1 (8 innings)
LOCATION: Frank Ignatius Grein Field – Highland Heights, Ky.
RECORDS: NKU 7-16 (2-0 HL), Dayton 12-10 (0-0 A-10)
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- Alicia Flores was near perfect in the circle as she went all eight innings with just six hits and one run allowed to go with six strikeouts. It was the sophomore pitcher's second complete game on the year, a mark tied for 14th in the Horizon League. Flores is also ranked fourth in the conference in strikeouts on the season with 51 in total.
- Sydni Barnes (1-for-3), Megan Kincer (1-for-3) and Brielle DiMemmo (1-for-3) all picked up a hit apiece in the contest.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two sides played seven innings of scoreless ball before Dayton was able to break through with a run in the top of the eighth to take a 1-0 lead in extras.
- The Flyers slammed the door in the bottom half of the inning to escape with the 1-0 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- Ella LeMonier led the Norse attack with a 2-for-4 game at the plate.
- Maddie Lacer (1-for-3), Jena Rhoads (1-for-3) and Megan Kincer (1-for-2) also added hits for NKU.
- Madisyn Eads stood out in relief over 2.1 innings of work. She allowed just three hits to go with a single run.
- Alicia Flores once again got the start in the circle with 4.2 innings that included seven hits, two runs (both earned) and one punchout.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
- Dayton got on the board first with a quick score in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Flyers added a run in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the seventh to close out the 3-0 win.
 
 
NEXT UP 
The Norse return to Horizon League action, where they are ranked first in the league, as NKU takes on conference foe Oakland this weekend. As of now a single game is set for Friday, March 24 at 3 PM ET, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 25, which gets underway at 1 PM.
