Softball drops two on second day of Cardinal Classic

LOUISVILLE – The Northern Kentucky softball program dropped two highly-contested games on the second day of the Cardinal Classic at Ulmer Stadium on Saturday.
 

GAME ONE - THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 0, Toledo – 3 (9 innings)
LOCATION: Ulmer Stadium – Louisville, Kentucky
RECORDS: NKU 3-9 (0-0 HL), Toledo 3-8 (0-0 MAC) 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- Lauryn Hicks threw a complete game in the circle in a tough-luck loss. She allowed just five hits and three runs (two earned) to go with five strikeouts over nine strong innings of work.
- Trinity Robertson picked up the only Norse hit in the contest with a 1-for-3 day as the dish.
- Ella LeMonier swiped a base in the game, her eighth of the season which leads the Horizon League.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
- The Norse and Rockets played eight scoreless innings before Toledo broke the tie with three runs in the top of the ninth.
- The Rockets slammed the door in the bottom half of the inning to close out the victory.
 
 
GAME TWO - THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 0, No. 22 Northwestern – 5 (7 innings)
LOCATION: Ulmer Stadium – Louisville, Kentucky
RECORDS: NKU 3-10 (0-0 HL), No. 22 NW 7-6 (0-0 BIG TEN) 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- Tatum Biddle (1-for-3), Maddie Laer (1-for-3), Sydni Barnes (1-for-3) and Jena Rhoads (1-for-2) all picked up hits for the Norse.
- Lauryn Hicks threw 2.2 innings of relief. She finished with two hits and one run allowed to go along with two punchouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
- The two sides played four innings of scoreless ball to begin the contest.
- Northwestern got on the scoreboard first with a four-run top of the fifth.
- The Wildcats extended their lead to 5-0 with another run in the top of the sixth.
- NKU couldn't get anything going in the late innings as Northwestern collected the 5-0 win.
 

NEXT UP 
The Norse conclude the Cardinal Classic with two final games on Sunday, March 5. NKU will take on Toledo at 10 AM ET and follow it up with a clash against host Louisville at 5:30 PM.
