Softball drops twin bill to Robert Morris

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky softball program found itself on the wrong side of a doubleheader sweep by visiting Robert Morris in a Horizon League twin bill on Saturday afternoon.
 
It is the first time this season that NKU dropped two consecutive conference games.
 
 
THE BASICS – GAME ONE
FINAL: Northern Kentucky – 2, Robert Morris – 5 (7 innings)
LOCATION: Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field – Highland Heights, Ky.
RECORDS: NKU 16-13 (9-4 HL), RMU 11-18 (6-7 HL)
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jena Rhoads paced the Norse on offense with a 2-for-3 opener at the dish that included a RBI.
- Maddie Lacer drove in NKU's other RBI in the contest off a 1-for-3 performance. She also came around to score.
- Trinity Robertson recorded the last Northern Kentucky base knock in the game with a 1-for-2 effort along with a walk.
- Ella LeMonier also added a run scored for the Norse.
- Madisyn Eads closed the game out in the circle with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Robert Morris got on the board first in the top of the third with a two-running inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
- Northern Kentucky answered right back with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame off RBI hits by Lacer and Rhoads to tie things at 202.
- It was all the offense the Norse could muster as the Colonials pulled away with a run in the fifth and another two in the sixth to seal the 5-2 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brooklyn Ballis took the tough luck loss in the circle as she went all seven innings with seven strikeouts. The standout freshman allowed just three hits and a single run.
- Maddie Lacer (1-for-3) and Jena Rhoads (also 1-for-3) picked up NKU's hits in the game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a pitcher's duel to close out the afternoon as the two squads would combine for just five hits in total.
- Robert Morris got the lone run of the game in the top of the fourth.
- The Colonials were able to shut out the Norse over the final four frames to escape with the 1-0 victory.
 
 
NEXT UP
The Norse and Colonials will clash once again in the series final on Sunday, April 14. First pitch is set for noon ET and admission to the Horizon League battle is free of charge.
