Baseball erases another deficit, sweeps PFW for second time this season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Northern Kentucky baseball secured a series and season sweep of the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons on Saturday, as the Norse once again erased an early deficit to secure a victory on the road. 

After falling behind 4-0 in the early innings, the Norse rallied to score 10 unanswered runs in the win. Five Norse had multi-hit games, while NKU's bullpen locked down PFW with 5.1 scoreless innings.

NKU finished the regular season series vs. PFW with a 6-0 record. Overall, the Norse have won eight straight over the 'Dons.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN - PITCHING

  • Aaron Boster got the start for the Norse, striking out seven batters while allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks. Boster pitched to a no decision. 
  • Shawn Parnell, Ryan Pehrson, and Gerald Hanson locked down the 'Dons on the way to a win. Pehrson threw two innings and struck out four to receive his first win of the season, while Hanson threw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts to pick up his first save of the season.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN - BATTING

  • Tyler Shaneyfelt wreaked havoc on Mastadon field, finishing 3-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored in the win. Shaneyfelt stole a pair of bases that cause PFW errors, and scored on a wild pitch. 
  • Logen Devenport finished 1-3 with a homer, two RBI and two walks. 
  • Josh Williams homered for the second straight day and tripled as well as part of a 2-5, three RBI day. 
  • Sam Bond and Brennan Rowe each had a pair of hits as well. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Logen Devenport launched his third homer of the series to put the Norse on the board, making the score 4-2 after the Norse trailed 4-0 early. 
  • Josh Williams homered later in the inning to make the score 4-3, before tripling home a pair of runs in the seventh to give NKU a 5-4 lead. 
  • From there, it was the Tyler Shaneyfelt show in the eighth, as he singled home a run before forcing a PFW error on a stolen base that scored another and allowed him to advance to third. He then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 8-4. 
  • Brennan Rowe launched a two-run double to right center in the ninth, capping the scoring and giving NKU a 10-4 victory. 

UP NEXT

  • The Norse hit the road on Tuesday for a midweek matchup at Ohio before hosting Oakland next weekend.
