Norse rally from five-run deficit for extra-innings victory over Youngstown State

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University Norse baseball opened its series with Youngstown State on Friday, taking on the Penguins in a new three-game set. The Norse scored just one run through six innings, but rallied late to tie the game in the eighth and walk it off in the tenth.

GAME SUMMARY
– The first two-thirds of the game were all Penguins, as YSU took a first-inning lead with a two-run home run and extended it in the third with an RBI single. Ethan Thomas got one back for the Norse with a solo shot before YSU scored three more runs across the fourth and fifth innings to make it a 6-1 ballgame. After Penguin ace Brayden Gebhardt exited after six innings, the Norse bats started to heat up, as Landon Springmeyer hit a two-run homer in the seventh to draw NKU within three. In the eighth, Jake Paulick led things off with a double before Josh Williams played the long ball to make it 6-5. The Norse then saw themselves with runners on second and third with no outs, and the Norse tied the game on a Springmeyer sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the tenth, Mark Nowak led things off with a single, then was bunted over to second. With two gone, Alex Brazer stepped up and slapped a single into center field, bringing home Nowak to walk things off in the series opener.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
Logan Wilson was the first of four Norse pitchers in the contest, as he threw 4.1 innings and allowed all six Penguin runs. He finished the day with eight hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. 
Ryan Gill got things started in the Norse bullpen, throwing 1.2 scoreless frames while allowing a hit and a walk. MJ Castaneda came in for the seventh and threw a pair of scoreless innings, allowing a hit and an HBP while striking out a pair of batters. Gabe Stout finished off the game and earned his second win of the season, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out one. 
– At the plate, NKU finished 9-36 with five walks and two HBPs. Leading the Norse was Josh Williams, who finished 2-5 with a homer, a double, and two RBI. 
– Reigning Horizon League Batter of the Week Jake Paulick finished 2-4 with a walk, two doubles, and a run scored. 
Landon Springmeyer finished 1-3 with three RBI and a home run. 
Ethan Thomas went 1-4 with a solo home run and a walk. 
Mark Nowak batted 1-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.
