Softball sweeps Detroit Mercy for series victory

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University Norse softball battled Detroit Mercy in a Friday doubleheader with the Titans, with the Norse looking to build off their series win over Robert Morris from two weeks prior. NKU kept it rolling with a pair of wins over the Titans on Friday afternoon, as Northern Kentucky now looks to sweep the Titans on Saturday.

THE BASICS - GAME ONE
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 3, Detroit Mercy – 1
LOCATION: Frank Ignatius Grein Field - Highland Heights, Ky.
RECORDS: NKU: 18-23 (6-7 HL) | UDM: 14-26 (6-7 HL)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
– NKU opened the scoring in the second on a Victoria Flores RBI double, and RBI hits from Keltner in the third and Rhoads in the fourth made it 4-0 Norse. The Titans got one back on a fifth-inning homer, but Makaree Chapman pitched a pair of scoreless innings to close out the win for the Norse. 
Alicia Flores threw five innings of one-run ball to open the game, allowing three hits and a walk. The senior struck out five batters while on the mound and moved to 8-6 on the season with the win. Chapman relieved her in the sixth and threw two scoreless, striking out the final batter and earning her Horizon League-leading fourth save of the season. 
– Offensively, the Norse tallied nine hits with three walks in 25 at-bats, with three of those hits being doubles. 
Kenzie Gulley led the way with a 2-3 day with a walk. 
Jena Rhoads went 2-4 with an RBI. 
Brooke Keltner, Eleanor Megall, and Victoria Flores all hit doubles in the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
– Detroit Mercy took a second-inning lead with a bases-loaded walk, before the Norse tied it up in the second as Peyton Mueller-Stenz scored on a wild pitch. A bunt RBI single in the third gave the Norse a 2-1 lead that they never relinquished, as NKU scored five in the third to take a big lead. Norse pitchers allowed just one run for the remainder of the contest in a seven-run win. 
– NKU threw three pitchers, as Abigail Byrd got the start, allowing one earned run, no hits, and three walks in two innings. Kyndall Ford earned her first win of the season as she allowed just one run in three innings. The sophomore stranded six runners on base in her three innings. Chapman again finished it off, this time with a pair of perfect innings where she struck out four batters.
– At the plate, the Norse batted 12-28 with a pair of walks and a pair of HBPS. 
Lexy Morris finished 3-3 with a pair of runs scored and a double.
Brielle DiMemmo went 3-4 with two runs and a double.
Peyton Mueller-Stenz also doubled, batting 2-4 with a run and an RBI.

Northern Kentucky plays its final game at Grein Field of the 2026 season on Saturday, taking on the Titans at noon.
