Softball splits day one doubleheader at Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Northern Kentucky University Norse softball opened up its Horizon League series with Green Bay on Friday, taking on the Phoenix in a doubleheader. The Norse offense started off hot in game one, scoring ten runs on 15 hits, but NKU was run-ruled 8-0 in game two.

THE BASICS – GAME ONE
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 10, Green Bay – 6
LOCATION: King Park – Green Bay, Wis.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
– The Norse led for the first four and a half innings, but the Phoenix tied things up at five with a four-run fifth inning. NKU responded in the sixth with five runs, enough to push them past the Phoenix.
Makaree Chapman started in the circle, throwing four innings while allowing four hits, four walks, and four earned runs. She also finished 1-3 at the plate with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and a walk. 
Abigail Byrd relieved Chapman in the fifth and allowed one unearned run. Alicia Flores threw the final two, allowing two hits, two walks, and an earned run while picking up the win. Flores moved to 5-4 on the season with the victory. 
– The NKU offense racked up 15 hits in 34 at-bats, with six different Norse recording an extra-base hit and seven recording multiple hits. 
Kenzie Gulley finished 3-5 with a double, RBI, and a run scored. 
Brooke Keltner batted 2-2 with a double, a walk, three RBI, and a run scored. 
Jena Rhoads, Brielle DiMemmo, and Peyton Mueller-Stenz all finished 2-5 with two runs scored. Emma Ginn hit 2-4 with an RBI double.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- NKU allowed five runs on five hits with two errors in the first inning, falling behind early. Northern Kentucky had a couple of scoring chances, but left runners stranded in every inning. 
- Northern Kentucky pitchers combined to allow 12 hits and four walks, with seven of eight runs being earned. 
- The Norse offense totaled four hits in 16 at-bats, with none of those being of the extra-base variety. Mack Brow was the only Norse to reach base twice, finishing 1-1 with a walk.
