Northern Kentucky Men’s Soccer draws with Southern Indiana in home opener

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University Norse men's soccer took on Southern Indiana in its home opener on Monday night, with the Norse seeking its first result of the season after a 1-0 loss in the season opener to UNC Asheville on Thursday. 

The Norse got off to a hot start with a 12th-minute goal from Carlos Mercé, and held on for a 1-0 lead at halftime, allowing no Screaming Eagle shot attempts after 45 minutes. Silas Borgman started off the second half with a goal, doubling the Norse lead less than a minute into the second half. However, once NKU went up 2-0, Southern Indiana started to put the pressure on, and scored in the 68th minute to reduce the Norse deficit to one. After multiple chances late in the match, the Screaming Eagles tied things up in the 84th, and nearly took the lead, but Norse keeper Caleb Pearson made a pair of late saves. An 89th minute USI corner kick resulted in a shot off target as both teams exited with a point.

– Carlos Mercé scored his first goal as a Norse, opening the scoring for NKU. 
– Silas Borgman recorded his first goal in open play for NKU, as he scored a penalty for the Norse in 2025.
– Diego Hoenderkamp notched his first multi-goal-contribution game for the Norse, as the junior recorded his second and third assists of his career in the match, setting up both goals on the evening. 
– Caleb Pearson recorded three saves in the match.
