Brooks Doughtie was hired as the first head coach of Northern Kentucky's Men's and Women's Triathlon programs in May 2024, and is entering his second season with the Norse. 

NKU’s 2nd year, 2025-2026 season included program’s 1st team win as well as podium finishes for the men in the MECTC standings.  The women’s team showed roster growth, as well as development with the team’s 1st program win at the Oct 3rd Millikin Splash & Dash.  The team qualified a program-best six student athletes for the East Regional triathlon championship with a program 1st 4 competing and finishing at the Regionals with Detmer, Bigam, Cunningham, Reeves finishing in 12th place.  The regional performances qualified Detmer and Bigam to compete at the Women’s Triathlon National Championship in Tempe, AZ on November 8th, where Detmer finished in 122nd and Bigam finished in 171st.  Detmer’s performance included being honored as an Academic All-American Honorable Mention for the 2nd season in a row.  She graduates as the only 2-time Academic All-American honoree in the very young program history. 

The men’s program showed a roster growth and included its 1st ever podium team finish with a 2nd place at the Zoom RedHawk Sprint Triathlon on September 14th.   The team had the most representation at the MECTC championships with 5 team members racing and including a program record 15th place overall with Sean Smyth.  These results allowed the Norse to finish 2nd place overall in the MECTC season!  The strong fall season allowed 5 student athletes to compete at the USAT Collegiate Club National Championship in Gulfport, MS.  Led by Toby Martin who competed in both the Collegiate Draft Legal race and the individual Olympic race finishing in 36th in the draft legal race and 84th in the Olympic race.  Also competing for the Norse was Sean Smyth finishing 118th overall, Fred Small finishing in 248th overall, Max Marion finishing 446th overall and Jude Woodruff finishing in 600th place overall.   The Norse finished overall 36th place in the team standings, a program best in its early two-year existence. 

NKU’s 1st year, 2024-2025 including having the women’s team honored as a CTCA Scholarship All American team, along with Alisha Detmer honored as an Academic All-American Honorable Mention.  At the 2024 Women’s Triathlon National Championship in Clermont, Florida, Detmer won the C heat and finished 116th place overall.   The women’s team competed in its 1st national championship with Detmer, and Timmers competing for the Norse for a 28th place overall team finish (13th D1). 
The men’s program competed in its 1st ever MidEast Collegiate Triathlon Conference (MECTC) with Will Griffith finishing in 62nd overall place.  The men competed in their 1st ever national championship at the USAT Collegiate Club National Championship with Will Griffith, Fred Smal, and Johannes Smal competing for the Norse at the Homestead, Florida venue which helped the Norse finish just inside the top 50 for team standings. 

Doughtie made his way to Highland Heights after he spent the 2023-24 season as the Head Women’s Swimming and Head Women’s Triathlon Coach at Guiflord College that competed in NCAA Division III. While there, his women’s triathlon team placed third overall at the NCAA East Regional and two of his student-athletes advanced to the NCAA National Championships, where the team placed tenth in the nation. It was the first time the program finished in the top-10 in school history.

Prior to joining Guilford, Doughtie was an assistant swim coach for William Peace University from 2022-2023. He also spent three years club swim coaching for YOTA swim team in Raleigh, North Carolina as an assistant coach.

Doughtie led the North Carolina State Triathlon club team from 2012-15 and again in 2018-19. His squads finished in the top-three of the MACTC standings for the first time in program history. He began his coaching career in 2008, coaching triathlon and endurance athletics under his coaching business, All Out MultiSport.

He also has experience at the national level as Doughtie has coached for USA Triathlon at World Championships events, which included leading the Team USA squad as the head coach at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama. He was also the head coach for USA Triathlon’s summer collegiate camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado from 2017-19. Doughtie has coached four USAT national champions in various multi-sport events during his time with the national team.

Doughtie graduated from North Carolina State University in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, where he was a cyclist on the Wolfpack Cycling team. He earned a master’s degree in exercise science from California University of Pennsylvania in 2015. He also has certification as a USA Swimming Coach to go with USTA Level 2 and USAT Youth and Junior certification.
