HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team will open the 2008 season on the road as the Norse take on Concord (W.Va.) on Friday evening at 6 p.m. in Athens, W.Va.
The Norse have won all four games between the two teams, outscoring the Mountain Lions by a 15-1 margin. Last year's meeting was a 4-0 victory for the Norse, while two seasons ago the Norse took a 1-0 victory in the only meeting between the teams in Athens, W.Va.
NKU comes off an impressive 2-1 victory over Ohio in a preseason exhibition.
Ashley Warndorf provided the equalizer in the 35th minute, while freshman
Amanda Mason closed the door on the Bobcats in the 84th minute by converting a penalty-kick winner.
The Norse close out the weekend in Athens with a neutral-site game against Davis & Elkins on Sunday.
WITH A WIN: The Norse will…
- Go to 1-0 on the season.
- Win their third straight season opener.
- Go to 10-2 all-time in season openers.
- Go to 14-0-1 all-time against West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams.
- Snap a two-game losing streak.
- Win their 12th straight regular-season non-conference game.
ONE MORE YEAR: After four years on the floor in women's basketball,
Angela Healy just couldn't stay away from the NKU athletics department and is using her final year of athletics eligibility to suit up as a goalkeeper for
Bob Sheehan's team. Healy was strong against Ohio in exhibition play, making two saves in the victory.
PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The Great Lakes Valley Conference coaches have tabbed the Norse to finish third in the league this year, trailing behind Quincy and defending GLVC champion Drury. The Norse garnered one first-place vote and 120 points total in the poll.
