ATHENS, W.Va. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team got the 2008 season started right with a 3-2 victory over Concord on Friday night.
Concord (0-1) took the advantage early, scoring in the sixth minute after Elin Torstensson took a crossing pass and slid it past NKU goalkeeper
Angela Healy to open the scoring. The Mountain Lions got a second goal from Gemma Nortcliffe, whose shot from 20 yards out just clipped the bottom of the crossbar to go in the net and give Concord a 2-0 advantage.
The Norse (1-0) woke up following the goal, finding an answer just four minutes later, as
Brandi Doss sent a cross to
Amanda Mason, who flicked a beautiful header across to find the twine and cut the deficit in half.
Hannah Wissel provided the game-tying strike in the 73rd, taking a
Kara Costello cross from four yards and burying the equalizer.
It took less than a minute for the game-winning opportunity to show itself.
Kelly Sullivan sent a serve to Costello in the 18-yard box. The sophomore then found freshman
Samantha Sutkamp, who cleaned up the mess and gave the Norse a 3-2 victory.
The Norse outshot the Mountain Lions by a margin of 28-7 in the game, including a 19-2 edge in the second half. Healy was sound in net, turning away two Concord shots in gaining her first career victory.
Northern Kentucky will conclude the weekend's action on Sunday when the Norse face Davis & Elkins in a neutral-site test. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.
