ATHENS, W. Va. - The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team completed a successful opening weekend of action with a 5-1 victory over Davis & Elkins College on Sunday.
The Norse (2-0) were forced to come from behind once again after the Senators (0-2) opened scoring in the 15th minute with a header goal from Cole Dant.
It wasn't until the closing minutes of the first half that the Norse responded. NKU freshman
Kelly Snead went on a run and got a pinpoint-accurate pass from fellow newcomer
Kelly Sullivan before going on to score the equalizer in the 42nd minute.
Sophomore
Kendall Day followed up with a goal of her own, again from Sullivan, to take the 2-1 advantage at the half.
The Norse continued to pour it on in the second half, as Day got her second goal of the contest just three minutes into the stanza off a direct free kick. Sullivan then got the opportunity to touch the twine in the 51st minute with assists from
Brandi Doss and
Kristi Hofmeyer.
Amanda Mason finished off the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 60th minute.
The result gives the Norse their second win in as many tries against the Senators, and puts the Norse at 2-0 to start the season for the seventh time in eight seasons.
Northern Kentucky will host its alumni exhibition game on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5:30 p.m., immediately preceding the men's contest against Carson-Newman. Alumni interested in participating should contact coach
Bob Sheehan at (859) 572-7742.
NKU will return to regular-season action on Sunday when the Norse open a doubleheader against Findlay. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. NKU soccer camp participants can receive free admission by wearing their camp t-shirt to the game.
