NKU, fresh off of upsetting Wisconsin-Parkside, hits the road to take on Lewis and Illinois-Springfield
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team takes to the road this weekend for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference clashes. The Norse play Lewis on Friday, while Sunday's contest sees NKU play at Illinois-Springfield.
Both games are set for 1 p.m. Eastern kickoffs.
NKU comes off a strong weekend, claiming a 6-1 victory over Saint Joseph's last Friday before shocking then-No. 20 Wisconsin-Parkside, 2-0, in Sunday's matinee. NKU is now 7-2 overall and 4-2 against GLVC competition.
The Norse attack is showing the same balance it achieved in 2008, as
Amanda Mason and
Ashley Warndorf share the team lead with five goals.
Danielle Hogue, with four goals and seven assists, leads the team with 15 points. Twelve different Norse have notched at least one goal this season.
NKU returns home to the Town & Country Sports Complex on Oct. 9 to host Quincy.
A WORD ABOUT LEWIS: The Flyers are 2-6-2 on the season, with a 1-5-1 mark in GLVC play. Offensively, Allison Schieffer leads Lewis with three goals, while Megan George provides the defense in net with an .800 save percentage. NKU leads the all-time series, 8-2-1.
LAST TIME AGAINST LEWIS: # Kendall Day# notched a goal as the Norse defeated Lewis, 3-0, in the team's last meeting against each other back on Sept. 7, 2007. Jenna Kramer made one save in net. Last year's regular-season meeting between NKU and Lewis was canceled due to weather.
A WORD ABOUT ILLINOIS-SPRINGFIELD: The Prairie Stars are in their debut season as a GLVC member, owning a record of 2-7 overall and 0-7 in GLVC play entering Friday's conference action. Casey Thorpe leads the offense with four goals on the season. Sunday will mark the first meeting between NKU and UIS.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kendall Day's return to the starting lineup was a triumphant one as the junior notched three goals and an assist in two games to claim the GLVC Player of the Week award. Day is the first NKU player to claim the honor since Jayme Light did on Sept. 10, 2007.
WALL OF WOOD: #Rachael Wood# equaled her career high with six saves in Sunday's 2-0 win over Wisconsin-Parkside. Wood now has two shutouts on the season and claims a 0.78 goals against average with an .824 save percentage.
