Kendall Day picked up a hat trick and
Hannah Wissel tied a school record with four assists as the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Illinois-Springfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Norse opened the scoring just five minutes into the contest, when
Emily Martin buried a shot for her second goal of the season off assists from Wissel and
Danielle Hogue. Wissel and Hogue would team up again to help Day score her first goal of the game in the 15th minute.
NKU collected two more goals in the span of just more than a minute, with Wissel scoring on an assist from
Kara Costello in the 18th minute and
Stephanie Wengert adding her first of the year in the 19th minute.
Maggie Smith got in the mix in the 38th minute, scoring her first of the season with help from
Kelly Sullivan.
Day completed her hat trick in the second half by scoring in the 52nd minute with an assist from
Laura Painter and again in the 56th from Wissel and
Amanda Mason.
Kristi Hofmeyer closed out the scoring with a pair of late goals. The Norse took 28 shots, with 20 of those going on goal. The Prairie Stars managed just four shots against the Norse defense. Goalkeeper
Rachael Wood made two saves in the first half, while
Cassie Lingenhoel maintained the clean sheet in the second half for NKU's fifth shutout of the season.
Wissel's four-assist day has been equaled three other times in Norse history. The last NKU player to tally four assists in a game was Kristen Votapek on Oct. 21, 2005, in a 9-0 win at Saint Joseph's.
NKU improved to 9-2 overall, 6-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Illinois-Springfield dropped to 2-9 overall, 0-9 GLVC.
NKU returns home this weekend for a pair of GLVC games at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky. The Norse host Quincy on Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, before entertaining Rockhurst on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
