HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team will face Indianapolis in the semifinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament this weekend, hosted at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
NKU and Indianapolis will kick off at 5 p.m. Bellarmine and Quincy will do battle in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m.
The Norse (16-2), ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division II national poll, finished on top of the GLVC regular-season standings and defeated Rockhurst, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tournament to earn the right to host the remaining rounds of the event.
Kelly Sullivan scored two goals with
Amanda Mason adding a goal and two assists and
Laura Painter chipped in with a goal and an assist herself.
Rachael Wood saved both Rockhurst shots on goal in about 60 minutes of play, while
Cassie Lingenhoel and
Stephanie Glass each added 15 minutes in net to share in the shutout.
The championship game between Friday's winners will take place on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. kickoff. NKU is looking for its record sixth GLVC championship and its first since 2005.
A WORD ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds enter Friday's contest with a record of 15-4, earning their spot in the semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside. Ashley Seehase scored the only goal in the victory and leads the team with 10 goals on the season. Shae Morris continues to patrol the net for the Greyhounds, claiming a 0.77 goals allowed average and eight shutouts on the season.
LAST TIME AGAINST INDIANAPOLIS: In the regular-season meeting between the two teams, Indianapolis used a first-half goal from Shelby Spinelli and one in the second from Morgan Binder, while
Danielle Hogue accounted for NKU's scoring in a 2-1 loss for the Norse. NKU pressed the attack for the final 10 minutes of the contest, but could not find the equalizer. NKU leads the all-time series, 13-3-1.
A WORD ABOUT BELLARMINE: The 20th-ranked Knights boast a 13-2-1 overall record and are the No. 3 seed in the GLVC Tournament. Bellarmine is led offensively Lauren Triplett and Amanda Moore with seven and six goals, respectively. Amy Kunowski has given up just six goals on the season in net, picking up eight shutouts in the process. The Knights won their semifinal match against Drury, 1-0, on a goal by Stephanie Wilson.
A WORD ABOUT QUINCY: A 1-0 victory over Southern Indiana in the quarterfinal round launched Quincy to a semifinal match against Bellarmine. Jenna Boyko's 11 goals leads the Quincy offense, while Toni Eye has given up just five goals and picked up 10 shutouts in 13 games in net.
ROCKING THE REGION: NKU retained its No. 2 ranking in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region rankings after Sunday's 4-0 win over Rockhurst. The top two teams in each region will be offered the opportunity to host first and second-round games in the NCAA Tournament, beginning next weekend.
SERIOUS STREAKING: The Norse have won their last 11 games, a streak unequaled since 2005, when NKU rattled off 15 consecutive victories en route to an NCAA Tournament run. In 2001, NKU set a school record with 17 straight wins while finishing with a 22-2 record and a berth in the NCAA national semifinal.
