WILDER, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team captured its seventh Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship with a 1-0 victory against Quincy in the title contest Sunday afternoon.

Amanda Mason's goal less than eight minutes into the game was the difference for NKU, which extended its winning streak to 13 and improved to 18-2. The Norse defense made the first-half goal stand behind the play of goalie Rachael Wood, who recorded three saves to earn the shutout.

NKU, ranked 10th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, won five straight GLVC Tournament championships from 1998-2002. The Norse also captured the title in 2005 before adding another trophy Sunday.

Laura Painter assisted Mason's goal with a perfectly placed free kick. Mason directed a header past Quincy goalie Toni Eye at the 7:42 mark to give NKU a 1-0 lead. It was Mason's eighth goal of the season.

With less than 15 minutes remaining, Quincy's Megan Reel blasted an 18-yard shot toward the NKU net. Wood, however, made an outstanding save on the shot to preserve the Norse's lead. Quincy (14-5-1) finished with a 16-9 advantage in shot attempts and a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.

It marked the third straight shutout for the NKU defense during the GLVC Tournament. The Norse outscored their opponents by an 8-0 margin in the three GLVC Tournament contests and have won 13 consecutive games since a 2-1 loss at Indianapolis on Sept. 20.

The longest winning streak in NKU women's soccer history is 17, set in 2001.

NKU earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament, and the Norse are expected to host a portion of the Midwest Regional next weekend. NKU is currently ranked No. 2 in the Midwest Region poll, while Grand Valley State is No. 1.

Pairings and dates will be announced Monday. Six teams qualify from the Midwest Region, with the No. 1 and 2 seeds receiving first-round byes.
