Jessica Farris was the 2009 GLVC Freshman of the Year, helping the Norse to a 32-23 record and a GLVC championship.
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University softball team has signed four players to national letters of intent to join the Norse for the 2011 season. Dee Dee Davis, Kari Lang, Mandi McQueen and Rachel Kohlman have indicated they will enroll at NKU following their respective high school graduations this spring.
Davis, a senior at Shelby County High School in Shelbyville, Ky., plays the middle infield for the Rockets. Last season, Davis hit .390, scored 32 runs and had 18 runs batted in under coach Kelly Cable. She maintained a .598 on-base percentage and swiped 12 bags during her junior campaign. She was named to the All-Region 8 team and was an Academic All-State honoree.
Lang, a senior at Glen Este High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, is a utility infielder with the Trojans. She hit .409 during her senior season, driving in 22 runs and scoring 24 for Coach Tim Gregory. Lang helped the team to an undefeated 10-0 mark in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference and a 24-4 record overall, the best in school history, en route to a district title and an appearance in the Region 4 championship. Lang was named first-team All-FAVC and an all-city honorable mention.
McQueen, a senior at East Central High School in St. Leon, Ind., plays the middle infield and outfield for John Roth's Trojans. McQueen amassed a .396 batting average during her junior campaign with 34 runs scored and an astounding 33 stolen bases. She was named to the All-Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference team twice and earned all-county over the last three seasons. In 2008, McQueen helped guide the Trojans to a 30-3 record and a spot in the state semifinals.
Kohlman, a senior at Evansville (Ind.) North High School, is a pitcher and outfielder for the Huskies. She put together a stellar junior season in the circle with a miniscule 0.50 earned run average with 55 strikeouts over 63 innings of work for Sarah Lindenschmidt's squad. At the plate, Kohlman had a .290 batting average in 2009 with two home runs and 15 runs scored. She was a second-team All-Southern Indiana Athletic Conference selection last year and an Academic All-City honoree in each of the last two seasons.
The 2010 NKU softball season begins on Feb. 12 when the Norse travel to play in a tournament at North Georgia College and State University in Dalonega, Ga. The Norse open the home half of their schedule on March 5 against Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Rockhurst.
