ASHLAND, Ohio – Lindsey Gaut scored 24 points, including a key basket while being fouled in the final minute, to lead Ashland to a 68-63 win over Northern Kentucky University on Wednesday night.
Rachel Poorman added 14 points for Ashland, which improved to 4-5 with the non-conference victory. Gaut netted seven points in the final minute as the Eagles snapped NKU's three-game winning streak.
Casse Mogan scored a career-high 28 points to lead NKU (6-4), which owns a 24-4 advantage in the all-time series with Ashland. Trailing 54-41 with 8:10 remaining in the game, the Norse used a 17-5 run to cut Ashland's lead to 59-58 on a basket by
Kendra Caldwell with 3:17 left.
Neither team scored for the next two minutes, but Poorman extended Ashland's advantage to 61-58 with a jumper at the 1:05 mark. After a missed shot by
Rachel Lantry on NKU's next possession, Gaut sealed the win for Ashland by scoring while being fouled. She converted the free throw to give the Eagles a 64-58 cushion with 38 seconds remaining.
Gaut made four more free throws in the final 25 seconds for Ashland, which was 26-for-30 from the line. The Eagles finished with a 42-33 edge in rebounds and won despite shooting just 36.4 percent from the field. Gaut led the Ashland defense by collecting seven steals.
Caldwell and
Jessie Carmack each scored 10 points for NKU, which is 0-4 on the road this season. Caldwell grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Norse, who made 38.5 percent of their shots from the field.
NKU resumes Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday with a 1 p.m. home game against Lewis.
