WILDER, Ky. –
Andrew Montgomery scored two goals and added an assist Sunday afternoon to lead the Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Lake Erie in the seventh annual John Toebben Classic.
Montgomery scored both his goals in the first half as NKU (2-0) built a 4-1 lead at intermission.
Braden Bishop started the Norse scoring by converting a penalty kick seven minutes into the game.
After Lake Erie (0-2) tied the contest at 1-all at the 15:26 mark,
Steven Beattie found the back of the net for his second goal of the season to give NKU a 2-1 advantage.
Montgomery extended NKU's lead to 3-1 in the 36th minute by taking a cross from Beattie and placing a shot past Lake Erie goalie Jared Daly into the back of the net. Two minutes later, Montgomery struck again by finishing off a pass from
Kevin Donnelly for a 4-1 Norse advantage.
Mike Jonca extended NKU's lead to 5-1 just 22 seconds into the second half by sending a free kick from the left wing into the back of the net.
Seth Eckerlin closed out the scoring at the 50:58 mark with his second goal of the season off an assist from
Paul Andrews.
NKU, which is ranked No. 4 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, finished with a 19-7 advantage in shot attempts. The Norse also extended their regular-season home winning streak to 25 consecutive games.
NKU begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday on the road against Southern Indiana. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.
