NKU volleyball hits road for North Alabama Classic this weekend

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University volleyball team hits the road this weekend for the North Alabama Classic in Florence, Ala.

NKU (3-1) plays Christian Brothers and Truman State on Friday. The Norse conclude the two-day event Saturday with matches against North Alabama and California (Pa.).

Truman State is ranked 13th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. NKU is 2-0 all-time against Truman State. The Norse's last match against the Bulldogs took place Sept. 6, 2002, in Tampa, Fla., and NKU pulled out a four-set victory.

200-WIN CLUB: Carlos Chia recorded his 200th win as volleyball head coach at NKU last Friday as the Norse defeated Mount Olive (N.C.) in three sets at the Tusculum Fall Classic. Chia, in his ninth season as the NKU head coach, is now 201-74.

QUEEN OF ACES: NKU freshman Shelby Buschur served up nine aces against Converse (S.C.) College last Friday. During the second set of that match, Buschur served 11 consecutive points, including five aces.

Buschur is a middle hitter from St. Henry, Ohio. NKU began the season by winning three of four matches at the Tusculum Fall Classic in Greeneville, Tenn.

SOLID WEEKEND BY NEMCEK: Junior middle hitter Kim Nemcek helped NKU post a 3-1 record at the Tusculum Fall Classic by averaging 3.79 kills per set and attacking at a .317 clip. She had 20 kills and 16 digs in a win against Newberry (S.C.).

SETTING THE TABLES: NKU freshman setter Jenna Schreiver averaged 10.1 assists per set last weekend. A Notre Dame Academy graduate, Schreiver also added 18 kills and attacked at a .333 clip.

ON THE OUTSIDE: NKU sophomore outside hitter Noelle Peterson finished with 44 kills during the two-day event at Tusculum. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Drennen added 27 kills and eight service aces in the four matches.

SERVING UP WINNERS: NKU collected 48 service aces during the four matches last weekend. Buschur led the way with 13 aces, while freshman defensive specialist Kylee Tarantino served up 10 winners. Junior libero Chelsea Clark added nine aces.

HOME OPENER NEXT TUESDAY: NKU plays its home opener next Tuesday at 7 p.m. against West Virginia State in Regents Hall. The broadcast of that match can be heard live on the Internet at www.nkunorse.com.
