WILDER, Ky. – After suffering three losses against Wisconsin-Parkside last season, the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team needed no extra motivation for Sunday's game against the visiting Rangers.
NKU ended Wisconsin-Parkside's recent domination by posting a 2-0 victory Sunday at the Town & Country Sports Complex. The Norse improved to 7-2 overall, 4-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Wisconsin-Parkside, the defending GLVC champion, dropped to 5-2-2 overall. The 20th-ranked Rangers, who lost for the second time in three days, are 4-2-1 in the GLVC.
Kendall Day gave NKU a 1-0 lead at the 22:59 mark by finishing off a rebound with a point-blank shot in front of an open net.
Danielle Hogue started the play on the right wing, forcing Wisconsin-Parkside goalie Cassie Glodowski to challenge the shot and leave the net unguarded.
Hogue sent the ball toward the open goal, but Wisconsin-Parkside defender Kristen Benson made the save. Day, however, picked off the loose ball in front of the net and scored her third goal of the season with the unchallenged shot.
NKU sealed the win at the 74:08 mark when
Emily Martin deposited a loose ball in the box past Glodowski for her first goal.
Amanda Mason and
Kara Costello picked up assists on Martin's goal.
Rachael Wood recorded the shutout and collected six saves for NKU. Wisconsin-Parkside finished with a 14-10 advantage in shot attempts, while NKU held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
NKU is now 10-6-2 in the all-time series with Wisconsin-Parkside.
NKU hits the road for Romeoville, Ill., to meet Lewis on Friday. The Norse conclude the road trip next Sunday with a game at Illinois-Springfield.
