HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –
Kim Nemcek recorded 17 kills and attacked at a .429 clip as the Northern Kentucky University volleyball team posted a 18-25, 28-26, 25-22, 25-16 win against West Virginia State on Tuesday night in Regents Hall.
Nemcek, a junior middle hitter from Geneva, Ill., added nine digs, six assists and two blocks. Freshman setter
Jenna Schreiver recorded 47 assists, eight kills and hit .583 as NKU improved to 5-4 overall.
The Norse rallied from a one-set deficit and remained perfect (33-0) all-time against volleyball teams from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. After winning the first set, West Virginia State forged a 24-22 lead in the second set and appeared on the way to going up 2-0.
Nemcek, however, converted two straight attacks for kills to tie the set at 24-all. Schreiver later picked up a kill to tie the score at 26-all, and she then served up an ace to give NKU a 27-26 lead. Schreiver, a Notre Dame Academy graduate, finished with four service aces.
Sarah Drennen finished with 14 kills for NKU, while teammate
Noelle Peterson added 12 kills. The Norse hit .231 as a team, including .351 in the fourth set.
Kylee Tarantino added five kills, seven digs and four service aces for NKU, while teammate
Shelby Buschur finished with six kills.
NKU is now 5-0 all-time against West Virginia State, which dropped to 3-6 this season. The Yellow Jackets, who advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament last year, hit .225 for the match.
NKU hits the road this weekend for a tournament at Lock Haven, Pa. The Norse begin play Friday with matches against Shippensburg and Stone Hill. NKU concludes the two-day event Saturday by facing C.W. Post and host Lock Haven.
