HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team plays its home opener Tuesday night when Georgetown (Ky.) visits The Bank of Kentucky Center at 7 p.m.
NKU is 2-2 going into Tuesday's game after posting a 75-55 win against Lake Erie on Saturday. Georgetown, a member of the NAIA, owns a 4-3 record.
NKU continues its homestand Saturday as Wayne State (Mich.) visits The Bank of Kentucky Center for a game at 2 p.m. Wayne State is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which competes with the Great Lakes Valley Conference for berths in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
HOLTON EARNS HONOR: NKU sophomore center
Ellen Holton was named to the all-tournament team at Bellarmine this past weekend. Holton poured in a career-high 17 points against Lake Erie on Saturday, going 8-for-11 from the field.
Holton, a transfer from Tusculum, averages 6.8 points per game and is shooting 61.1 percent from the field.
WINSTEL NEARS NKU MILESTONE: NKU head coach Nancy Winstel now has 638 career victories, including 599 wins on the Norse sideline. She can pick up her 600th victory as NKU's head coach Tuesday night.
Winstel ranks fourth all-time in NCAA Division II history with her 638 career victories. She has led her program to at least 20 victories in 17 seasons, which is 11th all-time in Division II history. Winstel's 638 career wins ranks third among active head coaches in Division II.
BOWLING THEM OVER: NKU junior forward
Sadie Bowling added four assists and four steals to her 17-point performance against Lake Erie. Bowling also buried a pair of 3-pointers in that victory. She averages 12.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Bowling also leads NKU in 3-pointers made with eight.
REBOUNDING MACHINE: NKU senior center
Kendra Caldwell grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds against Lake Erie. For the season, Caldwell leads NKU in rebounding at 8.8 boards per game. She has led the team in rebounding three times in the first four games this season.
LOWDOWN ON NKU: The Norse are 2-1 when leading at halftime this season, and 0-1 when trailing at intermission. NKU has yet to shoot at least 50 percent from the field in a game this season. The Norse have not allowed an opponent to shoot 50 percent from the field through the first four games.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST GEORGETOWN: On Nov. 24, 2009,
Casse Mogan and
Rachel Lantry combined for 27 points and eight assists to lead NKU to a 65-61 win against Georgetown. Mogan scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Lantry added 13 points, four assists and two blocked shots for the Norse.
NKU held Georgetown to 35.8 percent shooting from the field and improved to 14-1 all-time against the Tigers. The Norse have won the past five games against Georgetown.
Georgetown's only victory against NKU came on Nov. 16, 2004, when the Tigers rolled to an 85-64 win in Regents Hall.
