HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – A torrid second-half shooting performance ignited the Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team's 57-45 upset over No. 11 Indianapolis on Saturday night.

Another virtuoso performance by Casse Mogan helped, too.

h
Mogan scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead NKU. The junior guard also added five steals, three assists and two blocked shots as NKU won its fifth consecutive game.

Ellen Holton scored 12 points for the Norse, who improved to 6-2 overall, 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. NKU held Indianapolis (4-2 overall, 0-1 GLVC) to 35.4 percent shooting from the field. The Greyhounds, who defeated NKU twice last season, owned a 27-26 halftime lead but were just 6-for-25 (24 percent) from the field in the second half.

“We didn't play well at all in the first half, yet we were only down one,” NKU head coach Nancy Winstel said. “They were sitting back in a 2-3 zone, and they were making us execute. We didn't do a very good job of executing their zone in the first half, but we did better in the second half. We're going to have to work on doing a better job against zone defense.”

Kendra Caldwell added eight points and four rebounds for NKU, which shot a blistering 62.5 percent from the field in the second half. The Norse began the second half with a 15-3 run to take a 41-30 lead and held off a late Indianapolis rally to secure the upset. Mogan keyed the spurt with seven points, and Holton scored six during the run.

“As usual, Casse Mogan gave us a great performance, and Ellen Holton did some good things inside,” Winstel said.

NKU held reigning GLVC Player of the Year Samantha Meissel to 11 points. Meissel entered the game averaging more than 23 points per contest, tops in the GLVC.

“Number one, Meissel got into some foul trouble, and number two, I thought Kendra Caldwell really did a nice job on her,” Winstel said. “Kendra guarded her for most of the game, and I give Kendra a lot of credit. She has really been stepping up and playing like a senior for us, and we need her to do that. We don't have a lot of leadership because we're so young. I thought Kendra's defense tonight against Meissel was a big difference.”

NKU now holds a 41-16 lead in the all-time series against Indianapolis. The Norse are 25-6 against the Greyhounds in games played in Highland Heights, Ky.

Sadie Bowling grabbed eight rebounds and had four assists for the Norse, who play host to Tiffin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
