HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –
Katie Sullivan and
Jessica Farris each drove in a pair of runs during the second game Saturday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University softball team posted a 6-3 win against Indianapolis to gain a split of a doubleheader.
NKU improved to 23-12 overall, 13-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Indianapolis, the defending regional champion, is 27-12 overall, 17-5 in the GLVC. The Greyhounds – who won the opener Saturday by a 3-0 score - are currently ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region poll, while NKU is sixth.
Indianapolis scored three times in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead in the second game, but NKU countered with a run in the bottom of the frame on
Rose Broderick's RBI single. Sullivan's two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning tied the game at 3-all.
NKU gained a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning when
Stephanie West scored from third base on an RBI grounder to shortstop by
Emily Schwaeble. West, who led off the inning with a single, scored the go-ahead run by beating shortstop Carmen Martinez's throw to the plate on Schwaeble's grounder. Earlier in the inning, Broderick had doubled to left field to advance West to third.
NKU sealed the win in the bottom of the sixth when Farris lined a two-run triple to right-center field to plate both Sullivan and pinch-runner
Alesa Collinsworth.
Chelsie Roy picked up the victory and improved to 7-3 this season. Roy, who settled down after walking three consecutive batters in the third inning, struck out five strikeouts and allowed just three hits.
West and Rose both went 2-for-4 for the Norse, while Sullivan was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
In the opener, Indianapolis pitcher Megan Russell fired a one-hitter and struck out 15 batters en route to a 3-0 win. NKU pitcher
April Ehlers finished with 13 strikeouts, but Indianapolis plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning and added an insurance score in the fifth.
West broke up Russell's no-hit bid with a single in the fourth inning.
NKU plays host to Saint Joseph's in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at noon Sunday. Broderick, West and
Sam Del Vecchio will be recognized on Sunday as a part of Senior Day festivities for the Norse.
