NKU volleyball holds on to take five-set thriller from California (Pa.) on Saturday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Shelby Buschur collected 18 kills and attacked at a .419 clip as the Northern Kentucky University volleyball team held off California (Pa.) in five sets Saturday morning in Regents Hall in the Norse's invitational tournament.

NKU pulled off the victory by scores of 25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 18-25, 15-10. Buschur, a sophomore middle hitter and a native of St. Henry, Ohio, also recorded eight blocks as the Norse improved to 3-5.

NKU hit .455 in the fifth set and held California (2-5) to a .188 clip. Sarah Drennen, who finished with 14 kills, converted five attacks in the fifth set to key NKU's victory.

Noelle Peterson added 17 kills for the Norse, who hit .211 for the match. Jenna Schreiver added 56 assists and 13 digs, while teammate Kelly Morrissey finished with 10 kills and a .321 hitting percentage.

Kylee Tarantino led the NKU defense with 17 digs and added two service aces, while Chelsea Clark collected 13 digs and a pair of aces. NKU owned a 67-52 advantage in digs to offset California's 16-10 edge in team blocks.

NKU and California have now split four matches in the all-time series.

NKU defeated Gannon in three sets, 25-12, 25-21, 26-24, to conclude the tournament.  NKU is now 4-5 on the season and will play host to West Virginia State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
