HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team settled for a scoreless tie against Findlay in the season opener Friday night at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
NKU, ranked No. 9 nationally in the NCAA Division II preseason poll, finished with a 19-12 edge in shot attempts and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Norse (0-0-1) also had two goals disallowed in the contest.
With time running out in the final seconds of the second overtime,
Kristi Hofmeyer appeared to be in position to chase down a through ball for a one-on-one opportunity in the box. Findlay goalie Alicia Tutino, however, came out and smothered the ball just before Hofmeyer could attempt a shot to preserve the tie.
Tutino finished with six saves for the Oilers (0-0-1). NKU goalie
Cassie Lingenhoel recorded two saves in net.
The Norse posted a 19-2-1 record last year and captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. NKU is the preseason favorite to repeat as GLVC champions.
NKU begins GLVC play Sunday by playing host to Southern Indiana at noon.
