SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to 10 with a 3-0 victory over Illinois-Springfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Norse also presented head coach
Bob Sheehan with his 249th career win. Sheehan, who started the program in 1997, is now 249-52-16 in 15 years with NKU.
Amanda Mason scored a goal and recorded two assists for No. 11 NKU, which improved to 13-1 overall, 11-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Kristi Hofmeyer and
Hannah Wissel also netted goals for the Norse, who are in sole possession of first place in the GLVC standings.
Illinois-Springfield dropped to 4-8-1 overall, 3-8-1 in the GLVC.
Hofmeyer gave NKU a 1-0 lead just 4:31 into the contest with a goal that was assisted by both
Abbey Scherer and Mason. It was the fifth goal of the season for Hofmeyer, a senior from Seton High School in Cincinnati.
The Norse struck again two minutes into the second half when Mason blasted a 35-yard shot into the back of the net for her GLVC-leading 14th goal of the season. Wissel capped the scoring at the 71:02 mark by beating Illinois-Springfield goalie Kelli Kubal with a one-on-one marker that was set up by Mason and
Kathryn Hale.

Cassie Lingenhoel picked up the shutout and made four saves. The Norse are 3-0 all-time against Illinois-Springfield and have never allowed a goal against the Prairie Stars, outscoring them 15-0 in the three meetings.
NKU plays host to Missouri-St. Louis at 5 p.m. Friday with a chance to give Sheehan his 250th career victory at home.
