No. 14 NKU women's soccer looks to continue its winning ways this weekend

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team hits the road this weekend, heading northwest to Indiana to play Saint Joseph's on Friday and Indianapolis on Sunday. Kickoff on Friday is scheduled for 5 p.m., and Sunday's start is slated for Noon.

This past weekend the Norse (9-1 overall, 7-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference) picked up two GLVC wins, including a thrilling 3-2 win over Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday. The Norse went ahead in the first 20 minutes, using goals from Kristi Hofmeyer and Kelsey Laumann to take the 2-0 lead. Shannon Becker pulled a goal back for the Rangers in the 50th minute, but Laumann scored her second goal of the game in the 57th minute to stretch the lead back to two goals, 3-1. Kristen Benson's goal in the 61st minute pulled Parkside back within one, but NKU hung on for the victory.

On Sunday, the Norse dispatched Lewis,3-0. Amanda Mason notched two goals in the win, and Kelsey Laumann added her third of the weekend to round out the scoring. Rachael Wood made five saves to record the shutout.

A WORD ABOUT SAINT JOSPEH'S: The Pumas enter this weekend with a 2-8 overall record, and a 1-7 mark in the GLVC. They are coming off losses to Kentucky Wesleyan and Southern Indiana on the road. Allie Reiners leads the Pumas in scoring with three goals in eight matches.  NKU leads the all-time series, 12-2-1.

A WORD ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds own an overall record of 7-3, and a 5-2 mark in conference play. They have won four matches in a row, including a 1-0 win over then No. 3 Quincy on Sept. 25. Indianapolis' balanced scoring offense is led by Nicole Duncan, who leads the team with six goals, and Lauren Soza, who follows with four.  NKU leads the all-time series against Indianapolis, 15-3-2.

LAUMANN NAMED GLVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Freshman Kelsey Laumann became the third Norse player to be named GLVC Women's Soccer Player of the Week. The Cincinnati native scored three goals on the weekend in wins over Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis.

On the season, Laumann has seven goals and five assists for a total of 19 points.

JUMPING IN THE POLL: Northern Kentucky jumped five spots in this week's NCAA Division II national poll to No. 14, becoming the highest-ranked team in the GLVC. Midwest region foe Grand Valley State ranks fifth, and GLVC opponent Quincy comes in at No. 20.

GLVC LEADERBOARD: Amanda Mason finds herself atop the GLVC leader board in all three major offensive categories.  She ranks first in goals (10) and points (28). Her eight assists are tied for first with teammate Allison Ponzer and Wisconsin-Parkside's Shannon Becker. Kelsey Laumann's 19 points place her third in league play.
As a team, the Norse lead the conference with a total of 44 goals scored for a per-game average of 4.4. NKU's nearest competitor, William Jewell, has 25 goals for an average of 2.5.

REACHING FOR 250: Head Coach Bob Sheehan needs just five wins this season to reach the 250-win mark at NKU. The only head coach in NKU program history; he enters this weekend with a coaching record of 245-52-16. Sheehan entered the season ranked eighth all-time among Division II coaches for wins, with each of the top eight being active coaches.
