RENSSELAER, Ind. - Saint Joseph's College struck early, but it was Northern Kentucky University that scored often during a 7-1 drubbing of the Pumas on Friday.
Allison Ponzer netted a career-high three goals to lead NKU, which extended its winning streak to seven.
Amanda Mason added a pair of goals for the 14th-ranked Norse, who improved to 10-1 overall, 8-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Saint Joseph's (2-9 overall, 1-8 GLVC) stunned NKU with a goal just two minutes into the contest when Allie Reiners tallied her fourth goal of the season for a 1-0 Pumas lead. Mason countered four minutes later by sending a 16-yard shot into the net to even the score at 1-all.
Ponzer gave NKU a 2-1 lead in the 20th minute by finishing off a breakaway opportunity with a shot that ricocheted off the post into the net. Mason extended the Norse advantage to 3-1 at the 42:03 mark with her second goal of the contest, this one set up off a corner kick from
Laura Painter.
Mason, a senior from Northwest High School in Cincinnati, leads the GLVC with 12 goals. She is No. 2 in Norse history with 46 career markers.
NKU added four more goals in the second half, including markers in the 61st and 67th minute by Ponzer.
CG Bryant netted a goal in the 70th minute, and
Hannah Wissel capped the scoring with a marker in the 76th minute.
NKU is now 13-2-1 all-time against Saint Joseph's. The Norse have won the past four meetings with the Pumas by a combined score of 24-2.
The victory upped NKU head coach
Bob Sheehan's career record to 246-52-16.
NKU concludes the road trip Sunday with a noon contest at Indianapolis.
