HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer between Northern Kentucky University and Quincy, a 5-3 victory in the penalty-kick shootout sent Quincy to the finals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Officially, the game is recorded as a draw, giving NKU a 15-1-2 record on the season. Quincy advances to take on Bellarmine in the GLVC championship game on Sunday.
The Lady Hawks controlled play in the first half, outshooting the Norse 11-4 in the opening stanza. NKU came roaring back in the second half, though, taking eight shots to Quincy's one.
NKU had a couple of solid chances after halftime, the first coming in the 87th minute when
Amanda Mason's initial attempt was saved by Quincy goalkeeper Jodi Chapie. However, the rebound came back hard to the feet of
Hannah Adams, who looked for the chip shot and left it just high, the ball clanging off the crossbar.
“I thought we created some really nice chances,” said NKU head coach
Bob Sheehan. “Soccer is an unforgiving game sometimes, and we were just unable to capitalize.”
Mason would get another chance in overtime, taking a clean cross from
Megan Frye and just pushing it over the bar again, NKU's only shot in extra time.
The decision in the shootout came down to the second round, when Chapie made the only stop of the tiebreaker, turning
Laura Painter's attempt away.
NKU goalkeeper
Cassie Lingenhoel was stellar; making a career-high 11 saves to claim her third shutout of the season.
The Norse now await selection to the NCAA Tournament, set to begin next weekend. NKU remains as a favorite to host first and second round games in the tournament.
