NKU plays Southern Indiana in the first round of the GLVC Tournament.
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University faces Southern Indiana in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Friday.
The first serve of that match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Indianapolis, Ind., in the Ruth Lilly Center.
NKU (24-4 overall) is the fourth seed, while Southern Indiana (20-9 overall) is the fifth seed. Both teams finished 14-4 in the GLVC, but NKU earned the No. 4 seed due to its two wins against the Screaming Eagles.
The NKU/Southern Indiana winner will likely have to face top-seeded Indianapolis in Saturday's semifinals at 7:30 p.m. The championship is set for 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Norse are ranked 16th nationally in this week's AVCA Division II poll.
GLVC TOURNAMENT JINX: NKU has lost in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament five consecutive years. The Norse's last victory in the GLVC Tournament came on Nov. 10, 2005, when NKU posted a 30-24, 30-28, 28-30, 30-26 win over Lewis in the opening round.
GLVC TOURNAMENT JINX, PART II: Southern Indiana has defeated NKU the last three times the teams have met in the GLVC Tournament. The Screaming Eagles eliminated NKU in 2002 (championship), '03 (semifinals) and '08 (first round).
10 YEARS AGO: NKU last captured the GLVC Tournament championship in 2001. The Norse have won GLVC titles in 1985, '95, '97, '98, '99, 2000 and '01.
NEARING 1,000 KILLS: NKU senior outside hitter
Sarah Drennen enters the GLVC Tournament with 983 career kills. She is looking to become the 15th member of NKU's 1,000-kills club.
NKU middle hitter
Shelby Buschur has a total of 794 career kills with the Norse. She is currently hitting .402 on the season.
NCAA TOURNAMENT UPCOMING: NKU was No. 4 in last week's Midwest Region poll. The Norse are expected receive a berth in the upcoming NCAA Division II Tournament, which begins next week at the site of the No. 1 seed.
