HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Defense keyed Northern Kentucky University's 70-49 win over Georgetown (Ky.) on Wednesday night.
NKU held the visiting Tigers to 27.1 percent shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers to improve to 5-2. The Norse also drained six 3-pointers in the first half and built a 43-25 lead at the break.
Casse Mogan scored 20 points and collected six steals to lead NKU, which shot 40.9 percent from the field. Mogan, who netted 14 points in the first half, also dished out four assists in 28 minutes of action.
“We've been struggling, and tonight I thought we found ourselves,” NKU head coach Nancy Winstel said. “We are still a work in progress, and we're trying to get better.”
Jaimie Hamlet added 12 points for the Norse, while teammate
Ellen Holton scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Maria Bennett buried a trio of 3-pointers in the first half and finished with nine points.
With Georgetown holding a 13-12 lead, Bennett (pictured right) knocked down a 3-pointer to begin an 11-0 NKU run. Mogan's basket with 7:49 left capped the spurt and gave the Norse a 23-13 advantage.
Hamlet's trey late in the first half extended NKU's bulge to 43-25 at intermission, and the Norse coasted to the win.
NKU is now 16-1 all-time against Georgetown. The Tigers, whose only victory against NKU was an 85-64 decision in Regents Hall on Nov. 16, 2004, dropped to 9-2 this season.
Sadie Bowling grabbed nine rebounds to lead NKU, which held a 39-35 edge on the glass.
Stephanie Hodges added seven points and five rebounds for the Norse.
Andrea Howard scored 15 points to lead Georgetown.
NKU takes off for exams next week and resumes play Dec. 19 at Tiffin.
