RENSSELAER, Ind. – April Ehlers became Northern Kentucky University's all-time career leader in strikeouts Monday afternoon as the Norse swept a doubleheader from Saint Joseph's.

Ehlers struck out eight and allowed just three hits as NKU posted a 7-1 victory in the opener. The senior from Greenville, Ind., upped her career strikeout total to 840 to become NKU's all-time leader in that category. Krystal Lewallen owned the previous NKU record with 836 strikeouts from 2003-05.

Ehlers broke the record by striking out Hilary Banks in the third inning.

Ashley Gates was 3-for-4 and hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the opener as NKU jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Jessica Farris finished 3-for-5 for the Norse, who collected 15 hits in the first game.

In the nightcap, NKU completed the sweep with a 10-1 win. Emily Schwaeble hit a fourth-inning grand slam and drove in five runs to pace the Norse offense. Natalie Papi added a two-run double to highlight a four-run fourth inning as NKU cruised to the sweep.

Gates added her eighth home run of the season in the nightcap. The junior outfielder now has 30 career home runs, the most in NKU history.

Farris, Papi and Dee Dee Davis all scored two runs in the nightcap. Chelsie Roy allowed just two hits to pick up the victory in the five-inning game.

NKU improved to 25-12 overall, 15-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Saint Joseph's is 18-21 overall, 7-15 in the GLVC.

NKU plays host to Urbana at 3 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader. The Norse resume GLVC play Saturday with a noon doubleheader against Illinois-Springfield at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.
