EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Just two minutes into the contest Sunday afternoon, Northern Kentucky University owned a 1-0 lead over host Southern Indiana after a Stacie Volker goal.

It would be the only marker of the day for NKU.

Meanwhile, Southern Indiana scored three unanswered goals, and the previously winless Screaming Eagles pulled off a stunning 3-1 upset over the ninth-ranked Norse. Southern Indiana improved to 1-2-1 overall, 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

NKU dropped to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the GLVC. The Norse finished with a 20-9 advantage in shot attempts and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks, but Eagle goalie Stephanie Bodamer made seven saves after allowing the early goal.

It marked the second straight time NKU departed Evansville, Ind., with a defeat. Two years ago, Southern Indiana upset visiting NKU, 1-0. The Norse entered that contest on Sep. 3, 2009, ranked 14th nationally in the Division II poll.

NKU still owns a 12-5 advantage in the all-time series against Southern Indiana.

Volker, a freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, netted her sixth goal of the season at the 2:07 mark off an assist from Kelsey Laumann to give NKU a quick 1-0 lead. Southern Indiana tied the contest at 1-all at the 23:53 mark on a goal by Makenzie Brinker.

Southern Indiana took a 2-1 lead in the 54th minute when Julia Kohnen scored a goal, and the Eagles added an insurance marker in the 61st minute when Paige Nuelle found the back of the net.

NKU goalie Rachael Wood played all 90 minutes and stopped three Southern Indiana shots.

NKU returns to action Friday when GLVC newcomer William Jewell visits Highland Heights, Ky. Kickoff for that contest is set for 5 p.m. at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
