FINDLAY, Ohio –
Allison Ponzer scored two goals and added two assists as the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team rolled to a 7-1 win over Findlay in Friday's season opener.
The win puts the Norse at 1-0 on the young season. NKU is ranked No. 17 in the NCAA Division II national poll.
Ponzer got the scoring started just eight minutes into the contest, taking a pass from
Kelsey Laumann before burying her shot from 10 yards out.
Freshman
Stacie Volker added the game-winning tally less than four minutes later on a chip shot from 15 yards off a pass from
Amanda Mason.
Ponzer's second marker came in the 29th minute off assists from Volker and
Hannah Adams, extending the lead to 3-0 at halftime.
Mason, Laumann,
Olivia Lenzer and Adams added second half goals for the Norse, who's seven goals on the day were the most in a single game since a 9-0 victory over Illinois-Springfield on Oct. 4, 2009.
Cassie Lingenhoel made four saves in net for the victory, pushing NKU's lead in the all-time series to 10-0-1.
NKU returns to the NKU Soccer Stadium on Sunday for the 2011 home opener against Tiffin. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
