HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Offense continued to be the order of the day for the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team as
Stacie Volker had three goals and
Amanda Mason added four assists as the Norse took a 9-0 victory from Tiffin on Sunday.
With the win, NKU improved to 2-0 on the season and has scored 16 goals in two games this season, the most over a two-game span since 2001, when the Norse combined for 18 goals against West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling Jesuit.
Allison Ponzer got the scoring started for the Norse in the seventh minute, putting home a Mason pass that pulled the Tiffin goalkeeper out of position.
Volker followed up with back-to-back goals in the 11th and 14th minutes, both on two-on-one breakaways with Mason.
Freshman
Kelsey Laumann got in the scorebook in the 22nd minute, floating a shot from the corner of the 18-yard-box over the outstretched hands of the Tiffin keeper to extend the lead to 4-0. Mason's assist on the goal tied a school record for assists in a game, a feat last accomplished by Kristen Votapek on Oct. 21, 2005 against Saint Joseph's.
Volker completed her hat trick in the 28th minute, putting home an
Allison Ponzer pass for her third goal of the day and fourth of the weekend.
CG Bryant,
Kathryn Hale and
Laura Painter also tallied goals for the Norse on the contest.
“I thought everybody played well today,” said head coach
Bob Sheehan of his team's performance. “Starting in the back with [goalkeeper
Cassie Lingenhoel], she organized the defense. We always had players behind the ball.”
Lingenhoel picked up her second career shutout, stopping three Dragon shots in the victory.
“We're two games in, we're happy with where we are but we still have a long way to go,” added Sheehan, who's Norse are ranked No. 17 in the latest NCAA Division II national poll. “Our players have invested and they know what's going to make us successful. Hopefully we can continue to improve and get a little bit better each time out.”
NKU returns to action on Friday to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play against Kentucky Wesleyan. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
