NKU women shoot for 800th all-time win Monday during visit to Bellarmine

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team plays at Bellarmine in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game Monday at 5:45 p.m.

NKU is 11-3 overall, 4-2 in the GLVC. Bellarmine owns a 6-8 overall record, and the Knights are 0-6 in the GLVC with five straight losses going into Monday.

THE SERIES: NKU holds a 50-27 lead in the all-time series with Bellarmine. The teams split last season, with the host winning both times. NKU is 18-17 all-time in Knights Hall against Bellarmine.

GOING FOR 800: NKU can earn its 800th all-time victory by defeating Bellarmine on Monday. The Norse are 799-303 all-time in women's basketball.

LATE RALLY NOT ENOUGH: NKU could not recover from a 15-point halftime deficit and dropped a 63-55 decision at Drury on Saturday in Springfield, Mo.

Bethanie Funderburk netted 14 of her 23 points in the second half to lead Drury, which finished with a 48-35 rebounding advantage and snapped NKU's seven-game winning streak.

Katie Pritchard added 18 points for Drury, which used a 10-0 run in the first half to extend an 11-10 lead into a 21-10 advantage. Funderburk and Pritchard both buried 3-pointers to key the spurt by the Panthers, who took a 39-24 lead into the break.

Drury extended its lead to 17 points early in the second half and still owned a 15-point advantage with less than five minutes remaining, but NKU used a 12-2 run to cut the Lady Panther advantage to 60-55 with 20 seconds left on the clock. Drury converted three free throws in the final seconds to seal its fifth consecutive win.

Casse Mogan scored 12 points to lead NKU. Ellen Holton added 11 points and seven rebounds. Tiara Hopper finished with nine points and five rebounds for the Norse, who shot 34.5 percent from the field.

Maria Bennett knocked down a trio of 3-pointers for her nine points, and Jaimie Hamlet also finished with nine points.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS: NKU senior guard Casse Mogan enters Monday with 1,310 career points, which ranks 13th in Norse history. Mogan needs 12 points to pass Cassie Brannen (1,321 points) for 12th place. Shannon Smith (1,326 points) is currently in 11th place, while Christie Freppon is 10th with 1,339 points.

Mogan is tied for second in the GLVC in scoring at 16.2 points per game.

NO. 1 IN THE NATION: NKU is No. 1 nationally in scoring defense at 47.7 points per game. The Norse lead the GLVC in field-goal percentage defense at .316. NKU is No. 2 in the GLVC in blocked shots at 5.07 per game.

THE LAST TIME AGAINST BELLARMINE: On Feb. 12, 2011, Casse Mogan joined the 1,000-point club while leading NKU to a 66-43 win over Bellarmine in The Bank of Kentucky Center.

Mogan finished with 23 points and eight assists to spark NKU, which opened the second half with a 27-4 run. She also became just the 27th player in NKU women's basketball history to join the 1,000-point club when she knocked down a 10-foot jumper in the second half.

NKU held Bellarmine to just one field goal in the second half and rallied from a 31-28 deficit at the break. The Knights were 1-for-19 (5.3 percent) from the field in the second half.

NKU scored the first 12 points of the second half to gain a 40-31 advantage and was never threatened. The Norse held Bellarmine to 27.3 percent shooting from the field for the game and won the rebounding battle by a whopping 48-33 margin.
