SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to defeat the USC Upstate Spartans, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The Norse (5-11, 2-6 Atlantic Sun Conference) controlled possession for most of the game. They held a 16-2 advantage in shots over the Spartans (3-13, 1-6 Atlantic Sun). The Norse poured in seven shots in the first half, and nine in the second. NKU also took 10 corner kicks, and conceded just one to USC Upstate.

NKU's control of the match was rewarded in the 57th minute. Maria Silbersack poured in a shot inside the 18-yard box, and it deflected off Spartan keeper Sarah Plantz to the feet of Jaclyn Elmore. Elmore then deposited it into the side netting for her first goal of the season, giving the Norse a 1-0 lead.

The Norse added their second goal just over five minutes later. Elmore created the chance, but her shot was turned away. The ball bounced to Megan Frye, who finished the chance for NKU, giving them the 2-0 edge. It was Frye's second goal of the weekend, and her fourth of the season.

“Anytime you can score two goals, it's satisfying,” said head coach Bob Sheehan after the win. “Everybody has been working hard this season, and it good for them to get a little bit of confidence. It's really a product of their hard work.”

Northern Kentucky will conclude their season on Saturday when they travel to Lipscomb. Kickoff in Nashville, Tenn., is scheduled for 8 p.m.
