HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –
Casse Mogan and
Ellen Holton combined for 32 points and 10 rebounds Saturday afternoon as Northern Kentucky University cruised to a 57-42 victory over Southern Indiana.
Mogan scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Norse. She also added five steals, an assist and one blocked shot.
Mogan now has 1,520 career points and passed Michele Tuchfarber (1,509) for fourth place in NKU history. Barb Harkins is currently in third place with 1,585 points.
Holton finished with 14 points and six rebounds for NKU, which improved to 20-5 overall, 13-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth time in seven years. NKU head coach Nancy Winstel has now guided the Norse to 18 seasons of at least 20 victories.
Mogan scored nine of her points in the first half as NKU took a 28-22 lead into the locker room despite a sluggish start by both teams. Anna Hackert put Southern Indiana on the board first with 17:34 left in the first half, but NKU quickly gained control of the game and led by as many as 10.
The Norse held a 41-32 lead midway through the second half, and Holton then sparked a 13-2 run that stretched the lead to 54-34 with just under four minutes to go. Holton scored five points during that span, including a 3-point field goal to begin the spurt.
NKU held Southern Indiana to 28 percent shooting from the floor for the game and forced 22 turnovers. The Norse also collected six blocked shots as a team.
The Screaming Eagles won the rebounding battle by a 41-32 margin.
Tiara Hopper and
Sadie Bowling both finished with five points for NKU. Bowling added six rebounds, while Hopper collected six steals.
Stephanie Carpenter led the Screaming Eagles with 10 points, while Mary O'Keefe added eight points. Southern Indiana fell to 8-17 overall, 2-15 in the GLVC with the loss.
NKU is now 38-19 all-time against Southern Indiana. Saturday marked the final meeting between the two programs as GLVC rivals with the Norse moving to Division I status after this season.
NKU will return to action on Thursday at the Bank of Kentucky Center to face Bellarmine at 5:30 p.m.
