NKU women host Indianapolis as part of "Think Pink" promotion Thursday night

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Everyone is encouraged to wear pink Thursday night as the Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team plays host to Indianapolis at 5:30 p.m.

The WBCA's “Think Pink” initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

The first 200 females in attendance for Thursday's game will receive pink NKU bags. There will also be donation opportunities to breast cancer charities during the game between NKU and Indianapolis.

NKU enters that game with a 16-5 overall record, including a 9-4 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Indianapolis is 16-5 overall, 10-3 in the GLVC.

THE SERIES: NKU is 42-18 all-time against Indianapolis, but the Greyhounds have won the past two meetings, including a 55-44 decision earlier this season in Nicoson Hall. Indianapolis also ended NKU's season a year ago with a 61-57 victory in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals in St. Louis, Mo.

MIGHTY MO: NKU senior guard Casse Mogan enters Thursday night with 1,414 career points, which is No. 8 in Norse history. Pam King is currently No. 7 on the NKU all-time scoring list with 1,422 career points, while Linda Honigford is No. 6 with 1,482 points.

Mogan averages 15.8 points per game this season, which is No. 5 in the GLVC. She is also tied for ninth in the GLVC in assists per contest at 3.0 apg.

REJECTION FEST: NKU and Indianapolis are the top shot-blocking teams in the GLVC, with the Norse at No. 1 at 5.38 bpg and the Greyhounds at No. 2 with 5.29 bpg.

TOUGH ROAD: Jadee Rooney made two free throws with six seconds remaining to give Wisconsin-Parkside a 56-54 win over NKU last Saturday in Somers, Wis. Casse Mogan missed a last-second attempt on NKU's final possession, and Wisconsin-Parkside escaped with the victory.

NKU is now 25-10 all-time against Wisconsin-Parkside, but the Rangers have beaten the Norse four straight times.

Ellen Holton led NKU with 18 points and three blocks, while Mogan scored 15. The Norse owned a 10-point lead (43-33) with 11:22 remaining in the game, but Wisconsin-Parkside responded with a 13-2 run during the next four minutes to take a 46-45 advantage.

With less than a minute remaining and Wisconsin-Parkside holding a 54-52 lead, Mogan converted two free throws to tie the game at 54-all. Brittany Beyer then missed a jumper for Wisconsin-Parkside with 35 seconds left, but the Rangers grabbed the offensive rebound and called timeout.

After running the clock down, Rooney drew a foul from Holton and made two free throws to give the Rangers their winning points. Rooney scored a game-high 22 points and dished out five assists for Wisconsin-Parkside, which completed the season sweep of the Norse.

THE LAST TIME AGAINST INDIANAPOLIS: Earlier this season on Dec. 3, Nickole Gonser scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Indianapolis cruised to a 55-44 win over NKU. Kristin Turner added 14 points for Indianapolis, which used an 11-1 run early in the second half to turn a 27-26 deficit into a 37-28 lead.

Jaimie Hamlet made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for NKU, which was held to 30 percent shooting from the field during the second half.

SATURDAY IS TAKE A KID TO THE GAME DAY: On Saturday, NKU will hold the Take a Kid to the Game promotion when it hosts Saint Joseph's in an afternoon doubleheader. The women's game starts at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m.
