The NKU baseball team travels to St. Louis for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend.
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team travels to St. Louis this weekend for doubleheaders against Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville.
NKU will face Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday and Maryville on Sunday. The first game of both doubleheaders is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
The Norse enter the weekend 9-9 overall, 2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference after dropping two games to Quincy and sweeping Illinois Springfield last weekend.
Missouri-St. Louis is 8-7 overall, 1-3 in the GLVC. The Tritons upset No. 1 Central Missouri, 2-1, on Wednesday.
Maryville is 6-7 overall, 2-2 in the GLVC. The Saints split a pair of doubleheaders last weekend against Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan to begin conference play.
LAST TIME AGAINST MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: The Norse last faced the Tritons for a three-game series during the 2007 season in Florida. NKU earned a 2-0 victory over Missouri-St. Louis in Game 1 but dropped two games the next day.
Matt Marksbury pitched a two-hit shutout in Game 1 for the Norse. Kevin Dusold went 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the NKU offense.
The two teams are currently tied (17-17) in the all-time series.
LAST TIME AGAINST MARYVILLE: NKU swept the series against Maryville in 2010. The Norse outscored the Saints 57-18 during the four-game series, including a 23-0 victory to close out the series on April 18.
Pat Muth's run-scoring double with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning gave NKU a 10-9 victory to start the series. He went 4-for-7 with five RBIs, while
Jason Cisper finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs.
NKU currently holds a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series against Maryville.
SOLID EFFORT: Drew Campbell earned his third win of the season in Game 1 against Illinois Springfield on Sunday. He did not allow a run on four hits in six innings. He also collected eight strikeouts.
Campbell currently holds 3-1 record and a 4.70 ERA. He has 17 strikeouts on the season in 15 1/3 innings on the mound.
SMITH RETURNS: Phil Smith returned to the lineup last weekend and batted .400 over the four games. He went 2-for-2 in the opening game against Quincy with a run and an RBI to lead the Norse.
Smith leads the Norse offense with a .372 batting average and .571 on-base percentage. He has collected nine runs, five RBIs and four doubles on the season.
