Smith's extra-inning home run sparks doubleheader sweep for NKU baseball

ST. LOUIS – Phil Smith hit a home run in the top of the eighth inning to lead Northern Kentucky University to a 6-5 victory in extra innings to complete a doubleheader sweep over Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday.

The Norse improved to 11-9 overall, 4-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the two wins.

NKU led 4-3 after three innings in Game 2, but Missouri-St. Louis scored in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game.

Jake Morris regained the lead for the Norse in the top of the seventh with a home run over the left field wall.

The Tritons answered again to force an extra inning.

Smith led the eighth off for NKU and sent a Zach Standefer pitch over the left center wall for the victory.

He went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.  Max Colaner and Bradley Vanderglas both finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Brett Loeding earned the win for the Norse and improved to 4-1 on the season.  He surrendered three hits and collected three strikeouts.
NKU cruised to a 12-5 victory in Game 1 after falling behind early.

The Norse used a five-run third inning to tie the game and scored two runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Colaner started the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a Zac Asman sacrifice.  Brad Clement singled to bring Colaner home to take the lead.

A double by Smith allowed Clement to score, giving the Norse a 7-5 advantage.

NKU scored four runs in the seventh and one run in the ninth inning for the final margin.

The Norse put together a solid offensive effort as a team and finished with four players who collected at least two runs and two RBIs.

NKU returns to the field tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader against Maryville.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
