HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team extended its win streak to nine games Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep against Southern Indiana at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
The Norse improved to 16-9 overall, 9-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the two wins.
Brad Clement went 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBIs to lead the Norse to a 6-3 victory in Game 1.
For the second day in a row, Southern Indiana jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning,
NKU, however, responded in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
Max Colaner reached base on an error by catcher Dylan Mooney. Mooney dropped a third strike ball and then sent the throw to first over Todd Martin's head.
Bradley Vanderglas was hit by a pitch, and both Colaner and Vanderglas advanced on a passed ball.
Clement hit a double to right-center, allowing Colaner and Vanderglas to score to tie the game.
Phil Smith hit his fifth home run of the season over the right-center wall, and the Norse took a 4-2 advantage.
NKU added two runs in the bottom of the second to extend the lead.
Colaner sparked the Norse offense with a single up the middle , and he proceeded to steal second.
Vanderglas took advantage of an error by shortstop Reece Rounder, and Colaner advanced to third. Vanderglas then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Clement singled up the middle, once again scoring both Colaner and Vanderglas for the final two NKU runs.
The Screaming Eagles added a run in the top of the third inning, but it was not enough to overcome the Norse advantage.
Matt Jefferson earned the win for NKU and improved to 2-1 on the season.
Brett Loeding replaced Jefferson in the fifth inning for his fourth save of the year. He did not allow a hit and collected three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings on the mound.
NKU cruised to a 14-6 victory in the nightcap. The Norse held a 6-3 advantage going into the bottom of the fourth but used a six-run fourth inning to break the game open.
Kris Hecktor extended his hitting streak to a team-best nine games, going 3-for-5 with four runs and one RBI. He also collected two stolen bases.
Zac Asman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Drew Campbell picked up the victory for the Norse. He is now 4-1 overall, and he struck out five batters in six innings of work.
Southern Indiana fell to 13-11 overall, 4-7 in the GLVC.
The two teams will take the field again tomorrow for the final game of the series, which is scheduled to begin at noon.
