ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Northern Kentucky University men's tennis team outlasted Lewis to take a 5-4 decision in Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season finale.
The win is the fourth straight for NKU, which enters next weekend's GLVC Tournament with a 13-4 overall record and a 4-1 mark in GLVC play. It is also NKU's first win in three attempts against a nationally ranked opponent. Lewis was ranked No. 37 in the latest NCAA Division II national poll.
It was NKU's depth that won the day, as the Norse opened by claiming victory at the No. 3 doubles flight when
Drew Schroeder and
Guillaume Berman took an 8-2 victory against Jesse Hardacre and John Richert. The other two doubles flights were hotly contested and saw NKU fall by a single break in each match.
The bottom of the lineup came up in singles play as well, as
Pierce Kohls,
Andre Correa,
Christopher Angulo and
Tyler Fraser each won their singles matches to give the Norse the edge in the team contest.
Fraser's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Isriz Balase in the No. 6 flight was the only Norse point taken in straight sets. Correa claimed the comeback of the day against Hardacre, who took the first set in a tiebreaker. Correa stormed back to win the match with a 6-2 second set and a 6-3 third set. Correa is now a remarkable 17-1 in singles play and has won his last 12 matches.
