YPSILANTI, Mich. – Sean Carter had three hits and scored two runs and Josh Samuelson drove in a pair as Rockhurst University sent the Northern Kentucky University baseball team into the elimination bracket with a 6-1 win at the NCAA Midwest Regional.
NKU (36-21) will take on Grand Valley State in an elimination contest on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The winner of that match up will move on to play the loser of Saturday's early game between Indianapolis and Rockhurst.
The Hawks (34-17) had eight hits on the game, including a pair of doubles from Carter.
Bradley Vanderglas had two of NKU's four hits on the game, while
Phil Smith added a double, his team-leading 18th of the season.
The loss fell to NKU starter
Tim Clark (4-4), who went just 1.2 innings and surrendered two runs on two hits. Mark Himmelberg (8-2) got the win, striking out six while allowing just an unearned run on four hits over seven innings of work.
After a scoreless first, the Hawks got on the board in the second inning after Josh Samuelson's first hit of the day to drive in Carter, who doubled to start the rally. Back-to-back walks from Clark forced in another run and spelled the end of the day for the junior.
Derrick Jones added a run in the third on an RBI groundout to score Ryan Porter. The Hawks added insurance runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings as well.
NKU's only run came in the bottom of the eighth without benefit of a hit, as a pair of Rockhurst errors allowed
Pat Williams to cross the plate.
The Norse will look to avenge a 9-0 loss to Grand Valley State in last year's Midwest Regional that knocked NKU into the elimination bracket.
