HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University split a doubleheader with Lewis on Sunday in the Norse's final two regular-season Great Lakes Valley Conference games.
NKU cruised behind the pitching of
Tim Clark in the opener and defeated Lewis, 7-1. The Flyers earned a split with a 12-7 victory in the nightcap, a game that will be remembered as the last time NKU played a GLVC regular-season contest.
The Norse begin the reclassification process to NCAA Division I status in 2012-13 and will play as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
NKU closed the regular season with a 32-18 overall record. The Norse finished 25-11 in the conference and will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in next week's GLVC Tournament at Evansville, Ind.
The final seeding will not be determined until Tuesday, when Missouri S&T and Missouri-St. Louis meet in make-up game.
Clark scattered seven hits in 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win in the opener. He also struck out two batters and upped his record to 4-2 this season.
NKU struck for five runs in the third inning, with
Pat Williams collecting a two-run single to highlight the offense. An inning later,
Jake Morris hit a two-run double to extend the Norse lead to 7-1.
Max Colaner was 2-for-4 in Game 1, while Morris went 2-for-3.
In the nightcap, Lewis pounded out 18 hits to salvage the split.
Zac Asman and
Phil Smith both collected three hits for NKU, which is now 46-34 in the all-time series against Lewis.
